Repair Café at Bostwick Library
Stories from the Day
Every item has a story. Here are some highlights.
Hard drive
FixedI can connect my hard drive to a different usb adapter instead, so I don’t need to fix the broken one
Pencil sharpener
Fixed3D printed a replacement gear. Fixer (Rob Lazure) contacted owner to return. Repaired by Rob Lazure: 3D printed replacement gear. Contacted owner to return item.
Panasonic Boombox
Partial FixHow it works, what's inside. The dad said: "This was the highlight of our day. My son's going to find the part and try to fix it himself. At least we weren't home watching TV - we got out and were part of this community event, it was wonderful." The boy (~8 years old) plans to source the part and attempt the repair himself.
Vevor Auto Heat Press 2 in 1
Partial FixError diagnosed but fix would take too long. Owner needs to return to next repair cafe to complete the repair.
Sony 3-disc entertainment system
In ProgressRobert Lazure is experimenting with TPU (Thermal Poly-Urethane) filament to 3D-print a replacement stretched tuner belt. Tony Santiago also assisting. Customer (Brittany Wood) will return at next Repair Cafe (Masonville) to complete the repair.
battery charger
UnfixableFixer (Robert Lazure, [email protected]) could not find the problem. Unable to repair.
Electric Griller
UnfixableFixer notes: Not repairable. No continuity from HOT plug blade to any terminals in the red wires under the heating plates (top or bottom). Would need replacement of terminations and heat-rated wire. Neutral (white) wires have continuity to neutral plug blade. Metal parts have continuity to ground pin. The owner took the food blender home disassembled - looking for a new plastic gear.
Expresso machine
UnfixableFixer notes: Not repairable. Motherboard issue - machine has modular electronics requiring a manufacturer technician. Rusting found on main water valves inside the machine. The owner agreed to consider getting a replacement.
Microwave
UnfixableReplaced bad fuse, no change. Diagnosed a bad starting capacitor. Replacement part would cost more than a new microwave. Donna said: "It's not fixed, but at least now we know what's wrong. I learned so much along the way, it's amazing. These people are just so fearless... We should call them repair warriors!"
Rice Robot
UnfixableFixer notes: Not repairable. Water was inadvertently put into the electrical compartment (not the bowl compartment), causing shorting. Casing could not be removed without damage to the unit. The owner agreed replacement is more practical and cost-effective than professional repair.
